the anchorage, gibraltar
Client: Commercial Developments Inc
This is an important regeneration project in Gibraltar, which includes three main sites and was tendered by the Government of Gibraltar to find uses and developments to refurbish and enhance a very important historic building dating back to 1750.
The site is where Nelson’s body was returned after the Battle of Trafalgar. Saville Jones’ visionary masterplanning looked at the wider context, needs and viability, expanding the site open to developers to include land with a capacity for up to 96 apartments and 10 town houses.
Saville Jones secured a developers’ option with the Gibraltar Government and subsequently designed the development through a two-stage tender and produced full production and construction information for the contractor.
The design maximises the sea views and takes full advantage of the southerly aspect, exploiting the contours of the site to create two quite distinct areas. The environmentally conscious scheme employs passive solar efficient design and high levels of insulation to reduce energy costs.
The scheme also includes the restoration and conversion of the Grand Magazine, an 18th Century building, to a health spa.
