hoghill cycling centre
Client: London Development Agency
This scheme includes a new cycle circuit with associated facilities, including a pavilion, car parking and judge’s box resulting from the relocation of the existing Eastway Cycle Circuit, to allow the development of the Olympic Park and providing a legacy. The facility increases public access to the site and the amount of open space in the London Borough of Redbridge providing an important recreational resource to local residents, school and community groups, cycling clubs and enthusiasts.
A variety of road and hill routes, utilizing the existing site terrain and extensive landscaping have created off-road, mountain bikes and cyclo-cross circuits. Extreme biking including BMXing, ‘freeride’ and ‘dirt’ jumping features are incorporated on the site.
The pavilion was designed to be a fully accessible and flexible, multi-purpose building offering a suite of changing rooms for use by both team and individual users; club and meeting rooms for social usage plus support facilities including workshop, storage and office areas. An elevated judges’ box is provided for cycling events and competition use. Aspects of security, low maintenance, sustainability, natural lighting and site ecology were considered within the scheme.
A large number of protected and notable species were identified within/around the site. These include Greater Crested Newts, brown hares, pipistrelle bats and stag beetles. Mitigation works and protective areas and an existing pond have been retained and an ecological protection zone has been included on the site suitable for newts. Large areas of semi-mature woodland, grassland and meadowland planting are provided to harmonise with the existing surrounding farmland.
