rainbow leisure centre epsom
Client: Epsom and Ewell Borough Council
This flagship project was won in a competition and replaced the existing centre on the same site.
This new centre includes:
- 25m swimming pool
- learner pool
- leisure water
- four court sports hall
- indoor bowls hall
- health and fitness suite
- sauna, steam and spa
- activity hall
- changing
- café bar
- administration.
The design was conceived to maximise the very restricted, narrow town centre site whilst at the same time providing a light, spacious and airy building, which creates a pleasant environment in which to participate or spectate.
Good levels of natural light allow the centre to operate with low levels of artificial lighting during daylight hours and that, together with levels of insulation in excess of the minimum requirements at the time, contribute to reducing energy requirements.
The transparency created externally is echoed internally, where glass screens, where possible, are used to good effect to allow people to see into the various activity spaces. This makes it easy for visitors to orientate themselves within the centre and reduces the needs for directional signage.
The centre has been praised by ILAM for its design and management.
