spectrum leisure centre guildford
Client: Guildford Borough Council
One of Britain’s major leisure complexes located in an attractive parkland setting, this facility, at a cost of £28m, contains four pools, ice rink, sports hall, squash courts, ten-pin bowling, health suite, nursery, restaurants, cafes and bar, and outdoor athletics arena.
The centre is planned around a series of indoor ‘streets’ connecting the many activity areas and offering views out across the countryside. The building was cut into the sloping site to reduce the overall height and visual impact on this sensitive location. Its energy conservation strategy also includes the surplus heat from the ice making plant being used to heat the pool water.
The centre continues to win many accolades for its facilities and management. The Practice continues to be involved with the Spectrum, and has undertaken a number of projects including extending the Health suite to provide additional space; formation of executive viewing box to the sports hall; and the refurbishment of the changing village including an additional wet changing area and an external store.
